| in character; NAME: Jasper (Whitlock) Hale FANDOM: Twilight POINT IN CANON: post-Eclipse, pre-Breaking Dawn AGE/BIRTHDATE: He looks to be 20, though he was born in 1843 ALIGNMENT: Ambiguous. He thinks he's a good guy because of his “vegetarian” diet (as well as all of the temptation he resists on a daily basis, but most would think he was evil by the very nature of his existence.) APPEARANCE: PERSONALITY: BACKGROUND: Jasper Whitlock was born in 1843 in Houston, Texas, and from the day he was born he was winning people over. It seemed that one beseeching look from him could win his parents over to his way of thinking, one well-timed 'please' could have his sister giving him whatever he wanted. At first, it was just a matter of boyish charm, but as he grew older (and got even more charismatic) more and more doors opened to him. He likely could have done anything, but he decided to join the Confederate army at the age of 17. He lied about his age, changing his birth year on the application, and because of his height (and the way he seemed so confident, not at all like a lying 'child') his ruse succeeded. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the youngest Major in the state of Texas. He was proud of his accomplishments, he knew that his parents were as well, but it felt as though something were missing. When he was supposed to be evacuating women and children in Galveston before Union forces arrived, a vampire named Maria (accompanied by two other pretty vampires) found him. Too transfixed by her to run as he should have, he was changed into one of them, and followed her. He didn't know there was another way of life for beings like him. He knew instinctively that his time with his family was over, and that stung, and he knew that though he nearly worshiped Maria at times, she was not enough to fill the gaping hole in his life. For years he served her tirelessly, making and then destroying more of their kind, honing their skills to serve her purposes, and it nearly destroyed him. The hunting, the killing...all of it was draining to a man who could feel far too much. When Maria seemed poised to destroy him, it became almost too much, because the choice to kill the woman who made him, or be killed himself was hardly a choice at all. It was almost unfairly easy to guide the newborns to serve his purposes because of his gift. Human charisma and amiability had turned to something more, and Jasper could both feel the emotions in a room as well as influence them. He could calm a crowded room of explosive newborns quite easily, and because of this they trusted their leader. The problem was that it was not a one way situation, their emotions took a toll on Jasper, and left him more upset than ever. When one of his old friends who had fled Maria returned, leaving him with the best solution. He had noticed Maria's support waning from some time, and he knew that the time was going to come when she would kill him or he would kill her, and despite all she had done, he was adverse to killing her. However, the life that he had apart from Maria, while being one of peace, was still one of sorrow, because with each life he took the guilt and sadness grew. Soon he left to find his own path. One day, driven in to a small diner by a rainstorm, his world turned around. A tiny, unimaginably gorgeous woman—a vampire woman—walked up to him and chided him for keeping her waiting. Though there were many things she could want with him (including revenge for all the things he had done under Maria's service) he could not find it in himself to fear her, and when she offered him her hand, he took it, feeling hope for the first time in a long time. She became his world, his little pixie. Jasper had no more idea where Alice had come from than she did, but as he got to know her more he wanted to both thank and harm the one who had made her and left her so vulnerable and alone. How could someone leave a woman like Alice, he would wonder, and then draw closer to her as though to make up for the past wrongs. With her he felt complete, something he had never felt before. It felt as though everything before that moment when they met was another life, a dream, and that his life really began when he first saw her. Two years later, he was apprehensive in meeting with the Cullen family. Alice was his world, and he would follow her into hell itself, but he honestly didn't know what to make of this large family of people like them. He was wary of large gatherings of vampires due to his past experience, and he didn't want to bring Alice into a situation that could very easily turn into war. However, his Alice was determined, and he trusted her visions almost without question because they had led her to him, and so there was very little alternative. In time, he grew to respect and feel strongly for the Cullen clan, and though the feelings he had for them were nowhere near the ones he had for Alice, he came to think of them as family. Carlisle and Esme, while not exactly parental figures, were strong mentors, Edward a trusted, brooding sort of brother (though Jasper found his mind reading powers to be a bit frightening at times) Emmett was an amusing brotherly sort of person always good for a bet or a bout of wrestling and then there was Rose. Though he found her constant vanity amusing, he was glad to take on her last name as his own and have a sister again. Pretending to be her twin brother gave Jasper a sort of pleasure, because it was a bit like the life he left behind all those years ago. Adjusting to the new lifestyle was hard, both as a member of the family, as well as the 'vegetarian' lifestyle. He wasn't some heartless monster, he felt unimaginable guilt whenever he took life, but he was also fighting several lifetimes of bad habits. He knew the taste of human blood, and it all tasted the same to him. That made it even more tempting to abstain, because he knew he could bleed the blights of humanity dry and it would taste no different than the blood of an innocent. The taste itself was indescribable, so rich and warm and perfect, and the act of taking it could be so exhilarating, that Jasper often found himself close to slipping up, and that in and of itself was maddening. Because he was afraid of slipping up and ruining everything for his new family—and of disappointing Alice—he kept a wary distance from humans. Even when he would attend school with his 'siblings' he would carefully avoid contact with the other students if at all possible. And that was why he was so frustrated at Edward when he brought Bella Swan into their number. Alice told him that Bella was eventually destined to be one of their family, and he was happy that Edward had finally found happiness, but being in such close contact with a human was difficult to say the least. He didn't want to be the one that everyone had to look after like some sort of petulant child. His 'father' worked daily with human blood as a doctor, and he couldn't even get close to it without becoming some sort of rabid monster. Being the weakest was not something he enjoyed, because he had always been the strong one, the soldier. Bella's birthday was just one example of his weakness. One little paper cut and he was lunging at her, snapping his jaws and ready to fight his brother for her. He hated to admit it, but had Edward not been there, had things happened a little bit differently, his lack of control would have had him killing Bella right then and there. He knew, logically, that the human was Alice's best friend, that hurting her would hurt his wife, and he didn't want to do that, not for a minute, but when he smelled blood, or even an alluring human scent, it was as though control flew out the window. There was no more thought, no more sense, just that smell and the sweet, warm, tangy memory of what could be. He knew Alice was sad to leave Bella, but he felt more relief than anything. Though he liked Bella of her own merit, and supported her being with Edward if that was what made him happy, it certainly took a large chunk of his temptation away to not have a human so close to his family. More dangerous still, he was nearly certain the space that he tried to keep between himself and Bella was troubling her, and he didn't want her to take things personally. It was a thin line to walk, to be friendly enough to keep everyone happy and yet to not get too close, so that he could avoid harming her. Seeing the lengths that Edward was prepared to go to when he thought he lost Bella only reiterated what Alice had already told him—that Bella was destined to become one of the family. The one good thing about the entire Italy fiasco and the fact that Alice was nearly killed (something he didn't find out later until, as he was hearing the full story of the event, he began to dwell on what might have happened had things gone only a bit differently) was the ruling by the Volturi. Bella would soon have to become one of them. While that was not the most pleasant solution for her, obviously, as Jasper was concerned there were far worse fates, and it would eliminate the most dangerous source of his temptation. It was a winning solution all around. Soon, though, they would be faced with a new threat. Newborn vampires were ravaging Seattle of all places, and Jasper was again thrust into what he feared was a vampire war. He feared for them all, his family, Bella, and most especially Alice, but Jasper was once again in his element. He knew how to wage battles, how to stay one step ahead of the enemy, he knew a great deal about newborns. For once it was nice to be the one with the most knowledge, to be giving them all lessons instead of being the one that had to be watched. As he knew it would be, they defeated Victoria and the newborns with no loss of life on their side, but he was left with a bit of caution after the battle. He had always regarded the Volturi in a sense of admiration, he thought they kept things from getting out of hand, but afterward he was left with a sense of trepidation, a feeling that things were not over. He had been happy to settle down with the Cullens in some sort of semi retirement, but it seemed the time for relaxation was over. out of character; NAME: Dani E-MAIL: sad_shy_angel@yahoo.com AIM/YIM/ETC: AIM: devotedde TIMEZONE: Central US OOC JOURNAL: CHARACTER PB: Charlie Hunnam DISCLAIMER: Not Jasper Hale.
